What a garage clearance includes
We take out whatever you no longer want, and leave behind anything you would like to keep. That might be a few boxes, or it might be everything apart from the lawnmower. You decide, and we work to your list.
Most garages we see hold a mix of things that have built up over the years. Common items include:
- Hand tools, power tools, workbenches and toolboxes
- Car parts, tyres, roof boxes and old batteries
- Metal and wooden shelving, racking and storage units
- Bikes, garden furniture, mowers and garden tools
- Old furniture, carpets, boxes and general clutter
- Sports gear, camping kit and children's toys
Once the garage is empty, we give the floor a sweep so the space is clean and ready for whatever you want to do with it next.
Who uses our garage clearance service
Some people simply want their garage back so they can park the car or set up a workshop. Others are getting a house ready to sell, or are moving somewhere smaller with less storage.
We also clear a lot of garages as part of a wider job. When a family is sorting out a parent's home after a death or a move into care, the garage is often the last place anyone wants to tackle. We can include it in a full house clearance or a bereavement clearance, so everything is dealt with in one visit where possible.
Old paint, chemicals and other hazardous items
Garages often hold tins of old paint, weedkiller, motor oil, antifreeze, cleaning products and gas bottles. Some of these need careful handling and cannot simply go in with general waste.
Please tell us about these items when you ask for a quote, and do not try to pour anything away or mix products together. Leave tins and bottles where they are with their lids on. We will let you know what we can take and, if something needs a specialist route, we will explain your options. The council's household waste recycling centres accept some of these items from residents, and the Bradford Council website has up-to-date information.
If you find anything you are unsure about, such as asbestos sheeting on an older garage roof or wall, leave it alone and mention it to us. It may need a specialist to deal with it safely.
What happens to your things
We sort items as we go. Tools, bikes and furniture in decent condition can often be reused, and we aim to pass on usable items to charities and reuse projects where possible.
Scrap metal, cardboard, wood and other materials are separated for recycling where we can. Only what cannot be reused or recycled goes for disposal. If you would like to know more about how we deal with waste, just ask. You can also check any clearance firm's waste carrier registration on the Environment Agency public register, and you are welcome to ask us for our waste carrier details.
How we do it
- Get in touch. Call or email with a rough idea of what is in the garage. Photos help a lot.
- Get a quote. We can usually quote from photos, or we can arrange a visit. The quote is free and there is no obligation.
- Agree a date. We work around your timetable, including if you need us to collect keys by arrangement.
- Clearance day. We carry everything out, load it safely and sweep up.
You can read more about each step on our how it works page, or see how quotes are worked out on our prices page.
How long does it take?
A typical single garage can often be cleared in a few hours. A large double garage with heavy items, or a garage that is part of a whole-house job, will take longer. We will give you a rough idea of timing when we quote, so you can plan around it.
Getting ready for your garage clearance
You do not need to do much before we arrive. It helps if you can:
- Take out anything you want to keep, or mark it clearly
- Check boxes for paperwork, photos or keepsakes you would hate to lose
- Make sure the garage door opens, or let us know if it is stuck
- Tell us about parking and access, especially if the garage is in a block or down a lane
If anything personal turns up while we are working, such as letters or photographs, we can set it aside for you. If you only need a few bulky items taken away, our rubbish removal service may suit you better.
Garage Clearance: FAQs
Can you take old paint and chemicals from my garage?
Please tell us about any paint, oil, chemicals or gas bottles when you ask for a quote. Some of these need special handling, so we will let you know what we can take and what needs another route. Leave lids on and do not mix or pour anything away in the meantime, as that can be unsafe.
Do I need to empty the garage before you arrive?
No. We do the lifting and carrying. All we ask is that you take out or clearly mark anything you want to keep. It is also worth checking boxes for paperwork, photographs or keepsakes first, although we can set aside anything personal that turns up while we are working.
Can you clear a garage that is part of a block or down a lane?
Usually, yes. Just let us know where the garage is and how we can get a vehicle close to it. Lock-up garages in blocks and garages down narrow lanes are common, and knowing about access in advance helps us plan the right vehicle and the time needed on the day.
Can you clear just the garage and not the rest of the house?
Yes. We are happy to clear a single garage on its own. If you later decide you would like a loft, shed or other rooms cleared too, we can include those, and doing it all in one visit is often simpler. We can give you a no-obligation quote for either option.
